payton in the bamboo {kansas city fashion photographer}

Ok, technically Payton is not a senior, but I thought it would be good to have this post in that category as well. Just wanted to clear that up.

Anyhoo, Payton and I went out on the hottest day of the year so far and found this awesome bamboo. I didn’t even know Kansas had bamboo. BONUS.

And really, I feel a little wonky calling myself a fashion photographer, up there in the tag title, but I’d like to think I’m pretty darn close. Of course, it helps that Payton totally has that rawr model look down pat.

Here are some that I just love. I just wanted to put these out there because this is the kind of shooting I really connect with.

Minus the monster humidity, of course. yikes.

sight and sound {northeast kansas photographer}

I’d have to admit that music is as much a part of my life as the visual arts. It always has been. I can remember rocking out to my Cyndi Lauper records (yes, records…you know, vinyl?) back in the day and always had my mini purple boombox (yes, I said boombox), with me during my roller skating escapades.

Music touches me in a way I can’t even write about. It does the same thing a beautiful image can do, unhinge me in that innermost place where words don’t go.

So it’s no surprise that music and photography, or visual imagery go hand in hand for me. I get tons of inspiration when a song touches me. In fact, when I edit, I will often listen to music that fits the photos. Especially if a senior has told me one singer or another really moves them, I might even listen to that while editing. I believe it makes a difference.

I thought I would post music that gets me going from time to time. Just another glimpse into what makes me tick. Because like I said before, to know me, is to know my work.

the discipline of creativity

Through the years, I’ve had a lot of creative outlets. I’ve always been heavy on the creative side of the brain and light on the practical side. ;) But something happens when you put your creative talents into a business. Sure, it’s really my dream job, even though I’m still at the 0h-my-gosh-will-my-bills-get-paid-this-month stage.

if the world decides to catch up to me, it's a little victory

So, here’s a confession: I am very feelings oriented when it comes to wanting to shoot. Or really doing anything. That intuitiveness of knowing when my peak creative times can be a great thing, but the last couple years I’ve learned that creativity can be a discipline also.

Photography as a business has taught me several things about myself. I’ve learned that even though I am a total introvert, once I get out of myself and meet the people I am photographing, I love it. Maybe I’ve just been really blessed by working with such fabulous people, but I am slowly learning to get over my shyness.

It’s also taught me that even when I don’t necessarily feel like shooting, it’s always beneficial. I can’t remember one time that I came back from a shoot feeling the same funk that I felt before it started. It’s like all the stress from my daily life just melts away when I get the camera in my hand and I start solving the problems of light, posing and composition.

No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight

In between paid sessions, I give myself assignments also. I love doing artistic self portraits, something I’ve carried over from art school when I used to paint and draw. (Now you’re all going to think I’m a goon). I used to spend a lot of time photographing my own kids, but really they’re sick of me and my camera. And self portraits have taught me so much about posing and light for when I do other sessions.

soulmates

Every artist knows that you can’t wait until you feel like it to create. It’s great when that burst of inspiration hits, but discipline to create when that burst isn’t there really does develop something awesome inside that you can draw upon over and over.

january discount {in the studio}

Hey crazy cool peeps! It’s pretty cold out there, but guess what? I got my studio space all set up and it’s nice and warm in there. To celebrate, I’ve decided to offer a 1 hour studio only session for a discounted fee of $75. This will be available for seniors, newborns, head shots and kids. I am unable to offer studio sessions for families or engagements at this time due to space restrictions. And also, the way I capture family images is a completely different process. I like to call it editorial or lifestyle photography. It’s the way I love to capture families.

The studio is a great place to play dress up, to capture images with a distinct fashion feel and to capture your wee ones in a classic white seamless environment. Lately I’ve said that as much as I love the studio look, I will consider on location shooting and studio shooting to be like my two children. I don’t love one more than the other; I love them for different reasons. Unless one is being naughty and then I shall love the other more for that moment. But don’t tell them that. :)

So enough talk! Here’s what I’ve been up to in there. If you’re interested in booking a January discount, let me know. January will go quickly!{gremlinwrangler@gmail.com}

yeah, we had some fun {northeast kansas photographer}

I finally got my studio space set up!  It’s small, but we can have some real fun in there. I coerced Connor and her cousin Sara from Oklahoma to come over and play dress up. I am ecstatic with what we got!

Here’s a slick video of some of my faves.

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

For January only, I will be discounting my basic session if you’d like to come rock it out in the studio. Eventually, the studio will be the starting place for some sessions, like senior shoots. It’s a great place to get some warm, fun shots of the little people that you don’t want to take out in this cold winter. Though as I type this, it’s 60 degrees!

I won’t be offering family portraits in the studio due to space issues and the fact that my family shoots are a completely different process, being more lifestyle photography: ie, catching you naturally in an outside environment.

But definitely contact me soon if you want in on the January discount. After that, the studio will be the same as my basic session fee. gremlinwrangler@gmail.com
