I am going to be extending my hours and days available for summer! I’m excited to be able to offer sessions on weeknights starting in June and starting now, will offer either morning or evening sessions on weekends.

It started as a holiday visit and about a month and a half in, we decided it would just be wrong to send Chris back on that plane to Austria. So we put together a small ceremony in literally 2 weeks! He has brought so much happiness to my life and my family. He just fits here. So, now we will begin the immigration process to get permission for him to stay and work. When that’s all final, I look forward to what he will bring to this business also, with his massive expertise in photoshop and design.

Feel free to call me Mrs. Hilgert now.

The Peters family was a new family I met this year and I’m so glad I did. They were a bit nervous, not having really done photos before. And I think that is just perfect because then it’s like a fresh clean slate for me as a photographer. I always want people to relax and have fun. Everyone who knows my work knows I’m not about stiff, formal stuff and you can only get those relaxed smiles by being relaxed. You can’t fake that. When you come to a shoot, you have to throw all your expectations out the window and see what the time together brings. It’s a wonderful thing when we’re all on the same page. And Polly and Aric were more than willing to let me do my thing. They were just so cute, here are a few of my favorite shots from our time together.

Can I just say that I am so so so excited to be shooting this family’s wedding this summer?! It’s like a dream come true. Brooke and Chauncey came to me a couple years ago for the first time and I have been in love with them ever since. We just connected right away. I’m certain that if we lived closer, we’d be hanging out, listening to awesome music and drinking coffee and stuff. I had just a terrific fall season of family sessions, and this was one of my favorites. Excuse me while I post way too many photos now…

Whenever I sit down to update my blog, I am usually doing a whole batch of sessions. It’s then that I feel like a broken record, but I can’t help it! The Caylor family is yet another totally awesome group of people I am a better person for knowing. I love when clients become friends and I love it when we’ve worked together almost the entire time I’ve been doing this and the shoot becomes just a huge playtime for Carrie. And then I end up with SO many usable images, but that’s another story entirely. Here’s a look at the Caylor’s 2012 photo session.

The Stanley’s are one of the jewels that I know I will hear from every time they need photos of their growing family. And I’m so thankful for that. They are fun, quirky, positive and just a joy to shoot. Always willing to do something crazy and fun. This year the girls had SO many ideas. I love that. I let them direct, I take their suggested shots and in between I get some real gold because everyone was having fun. Here’s a peek at their photos.

Katie is one of the most unique people I’ve ever met. And I’ve met quite a few somehow thanks to the universe sending them my way. She’s an actress. And she’s golden through and through. She’s just one of those people that you know has good things coming her way. You look at a person’s life and you see how they react and come through things and you know: this is someone special.

I was honored to have her in front of my lens.

I was really looking forward to Lisa and Pete’s shoot. I really loved what we had captured the previous year and was looking forward to seeing how much those two cuties of theirs had grown. Sometimes kids just don’t feel well and that was the case this year. That’s ok, I had my magic suitcase of tricks. And I had my humiliating monkey sounds…(which didn’t work It took some doing, but I cracked them eventually and by the end of the shoot, we were all cracking up. They gave me just the window I needed to capture the cuteness and loveliness of this awesome family.

Alec was my second senior guy to photograph. I’ve known Alec and his family for several years, so there was definitely that level of comfort I love to have going into a shoot. Alec is another individual that is just his own person. He knows what he’s into and doesn’t really care who approves. We had a lot of fun shooting and getting a little crazy. We always try to get a little crazy at photo shoots. Some of you know what I’m talking about. haha.

Let’s hear it for the boys. I only had 2 senior boys this year, which is entirely typical, but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed working with both. First up was Taylor and let me just say, what a great young man. This guy really puts out the chill vibe. Totally easy to hang with and photograph. This guy is going places with such a positive attitude.

This is my cousin Chelsea. I just love this girl to death. Not to embarrass her, but I remember her as a tiny human toddling around looking up at me with that cute little face and those ginormous eyes. Sigh…where did the time go?

Anyway, she’s pretty awesome. She’s a young woman that knows who she is, has a great sense of humor and makes an impression anywhere she goes. Oh, and did I mention she was totally easy to photograph? Yeah, we had a good time and some pretty yummy light to work with.

I love it when upcoming senior girls already have me picked out as their photographer. It means that they’ve been following my work and they just get it. This was Shelbi. It’s how I knew I already liked her. But really, she is just a happy ray of sunshine, which is good since we really had none at her shoot! That’s ok, she was a pleasure to work with and just super nice. I thought it was especially cute that she was losing her voice a little and she told me it was because, “I just get really excited at games.”…referring to her heavy involvement in sports at school. Gotta love that enthusiasm.

Beauty comes in so many colors and sizes and shapes. If you’ve been following my work for very long, you know I connect most with people who are individuals, who walk off the beaten path (which isn’t always the easiest one), and who love each other with abandon. When Christa and Jenny, sisters, brought their kids down for the shoot, I knew I was in for a very fun ride. Taking such a diverse group of kids, each from different countries and capturing their quirkiness and love for each other was a rewarding experience I will never ever forget.

I met Abby a few years ago while photographing my friend’s dance group. I didn’t really talk to her much, but thought she was a lovely dancer and a lovely girl. But after working with her the other day, I can say with some certainty that there is a real depth to this girl that I hope people don’t miss. She is kind, funny, friendly and gracious. I just had the best time getting to know her and trying to capture a bit of that brilliant spirit of hers in my camera.

We all know that a pretty face isn’t everything. What really matters in the end, is how you treat people and your capacity to love. Abby has both of these in spades.

A beautiful person is only truly beautiful from the inside out. I think we definitely captured that at her shoot. Take a look.

This is Hank. I had the pleasure of capturing his newborn photos which, even then, were full of spunk.

Fast forward 6 months and let’s just say this: a baby with this much character, this early? Mom and Dad are in for a ride.

Most of my clients are people I would actually hang out with. And sometimes I just feel like I find soul mates. I had no idea what I was in for when I got Sydney’s email requesting to do her senior photos. I loved her quirky about me segment and as we literally ran around getting the photos while it threatened to rain on us that morning, we found one thing after another in common. I think our mutual love for Harry Potter, musical theater and omg..The Doctor *swoon*, really sealed the deal.

And the shoot. Good grief. Someone posted a comment on one of Sydney’s pictures on my Facebook page that she looked like a superhero and you know? That is a good description. She has this way of embodying awesomeness and just projecting it out into the world. I only just met her and have only spent a brief amount of time during the shoot, but she sure left an impression. This is a girl who’s going to kick major arse in her life. In a very good way.

I love this girl and I think you will love taking a look at her session.

I feel so lucky that we crossed paths, Sydney! I will be keeping an eye on you young lady. You have some epicness ahead. I’m sure of it.

If I had to use three words to describe Jennifer to you, they would be: bubbly, sunshiney, and surprising. Sunshiney can be a word. I said so. Here’s a fact: everyone is nervous before a shoot. So was Jennifer. But I am never worried about this. Because right away, I could tell she was going to totally nail this shoot. I don’t mind having to coax a personality out for the camera when it’s needed; that’s my job. But there was no coaxing needed. Jennifer just looked straight down my lens and owned it.

In the end, she was a total trooper as I dragged her around to various locations in the heat. She has such a sunny, gentle presence and it was a joy to capture her colorfulness for her photos. Here’s a look at Jennifer’s session.

I’ve known Jessie for several years and was just tickled pink when I got the email that she wanted me to capture her senior pictures. Once again, I couldn’t believe it was time for that already. Time is such a funny thing. It was wonderful connecting with her again and witnessing firsthand what a big hearted, mature young woman she is becoming. This is one thing I love about photographing seniors. These guys and girls are all on this incredible verge of beginning a new chapter in their lives. I get the privilege of capturing these shining lights that sometimes are just ready to burst.

2012 is the year of the dragon and it just so happens that I was born in the year of the dragon, back in 1976. Yes, I know that you now know my age, but I really am not concerned. I love dragons, always have. I love the qualities they represent and the sheer epicness they are. I’m not sure epicness is a word, but let’s just pretend it is now.

In addition to my paid sessions, I am really trying to grow my work into something more. I’m feeling the transition in other ways than just re-branding my business. Before I did photography professionally, I immersed myself in other art forms. This is why I’ve said I am first and foremost an artist. I have deep roots in what I call the artist’s mindset. And I feel it pulling me back. I don’t think it ever left. I just think it is resurfacing and merging with what I’ve learned about digital photography in the last several years.

So, maybe expect to see some of that work on this website also.

I don’t know how this will develop. I really don’t know what to expect. I do know that my passion continues to be about capturing the beauty of life. In whatever form that takes me.

Thanks to Payton who was kind enough to model for me when I had no idea what I wanted to shoot on this day. This was a day to push myself out of my mental fog and find the beauty.

Sometimes life gets crazy like that. My family has been going through a very personal and overwhelming time of adjustment. During this time, I’ve simplified my life in every way possible, including my photography business in order to process through the difficulties in a way that is healthy and balanced.

Funny thing is, during this time some amazing things are also happening, creatively and personally. I sense a change in direction for my photography and artistic skills. I don’t have a full grasp on all this will entail just yet, but I feel exciting things on the horizon.

For now, I will continue to do the shoots that I love to do on a minimal basis.

What this means for you, my wonderful clients and supporters:

1. I will only be scheduling shoots on Saturdays in the early morning or evening hours. I can make exceptions to this for reschedules if needed.

2. I no longer offer studio photography as I do not have the space available. I am still interested in boudoir and newborn photography, done in my studio space in the past, but have had some success using the home setting for these and would like to offer that as a solution for future sessions.

3. I made myself a promise this year to only shoot the kinds of things I love. This is harder to define, but one thing I will no longer be offering is large group photography. I will still be doing family shoots of course, but large groups of extended family is not something I feel I can do at this time. If you have questions about this, please ask.

I want to offer my creative skills in a way that I am great at and as a result, in a way you will love. This means I need to operate within the boundaries that I feel the best about my art. I have said many times that I am not a photographer for everyone. I am an artist that works best with people who want me to create my art for them and give me the freedom to do so.

I hope above all to continue to create works of beauty for all who appreciate and want it.

The last family session of 2011 went to the Morris family. I love it when someone tells me their husband doesn’t like getting their photos taken and by the end of the session, they are gushing about how that wasn’t painful at all. And in this case, making plans for camping photos, motorcyle photos, etc. hahaha. I love changing people’s perspective on what photography is. Capturing you should not be hard or painful.

I didn’t have nearly as many seniors this year as last, but the ones I had were pretty bomb. Michelle was no exception. She took me to a magical secret location that I absolutely fell in love with and have gone back a couple times. Oh man! What a whirlwind the last couple months have been! After a very slow, unusual summer, I’ve been out and about rocking out my camera every weekend. And here we are in November already and I’m just now updating my poor neglected website.

Anyhoo, I loved photographing these little cuties. I also loved that mom gave me complete freedom and permission to just take the kiddos where I wanted without her. That’s a lot of trust and I appreciated it! It made for a great relaxed shoot with the kids. Something to think about if you’re wanting a shoot with just your children. They often do much better without parental units hanging about.

Boy, was I excited when new client Mimi told me about the beach that she’d like to do her kids’ photo session on. Granted, it’s not like it was the ocean or anything, but I love anything with water and sand and adorable kids involved. And then, to make it just epic, Mimi hit me with a tutu and fairy wings for little Alexa. And of course, Cayden looked so dapper and summery and man, can that kid melt me with his gaze.

This year I will (tentatively) only be booking 2 sessions a week, so get your date booked now. I am employed part time and so my business will be going part time also. I hate to turn anyone away due to being too booked, so please don’t wait till the last minute, or I’ll be sad. We don’t want that.

Brandi and I worked at Walmart together. We have both moved on to better things, but I remember harassing her on a regular basis about letting me shoot her wedding. I don’t think she and Josh had picked a date at that point, but I was thrilled when she emailed me about engagement photos and photographing their upcoming wedding next April.

They’ve been engaged awhile, but let me just tell you, they are so cute together. He makes her giggle incessantly and I’m pretty sure she secretly loves it. I love being around people in love. And even better, I love having the honor of capturing it to share it with all of you.

I love meeting awesome people, and Auston is no exception. I usually don’t know what to expect beyond the short about me I ask people to fill out and what I get from our corresponding emails. But Auston opened her front door to greet me with the biggest smile I have ever seen. I kinda knew then that I had quite a jewel to capture.

We had a blast! Cute outfits, a new location for me, vintage stuff and beautiful light. It was awesome. Here are some of my favorites.

Auston, I am so glad we connected. I just think you and your mom are the coolest. Have a great senior year!!

I love doing photos for fellow photographers. I know how it feels to not want to be on the other side of the camera. It’s scary and I am honored to have had that trust placed in me from several photogs that wanted me to photograph them. Lacey takes some awesome photos and certainly has a bright future ahead of her.

I had fun getting to know a little more about her at the shoot and what makes her tick. She has great ideas and really has a fun personality…and a gorgeous smile.

Ok, technically Payton is not a senior, but I thought it would be good to have this post in that category as well. Just wanted to clear that up.

Anyhoo, Payton and I went out on the hottest day of the year so far and found this awesome bamboo. I didn’t even know Kansas had bamboo. BONUS.

And really, I feel a little wonky calling myself a fashion photographer, up there in the tag title, but I’d like to think I’m pretty darn close. Of course, it helps that Payton totally has that rawr model look down pat.

Here are some that I just love. I just wanted to put these out there because this is the kind of shooting I really connect with.

I cannot tell you how much fun I had photographing Sarah and Ryan’s wedding. The location was perfect, (right up my alley, haha), the lighting was beautiful and the people were full of joy. Joy was just pouring from everyone. It was amazing. I could go on and on really, but here’s a slideshow of my faves. Put on some happy, romantic music and play that thing.

Sarah and Ryan, I cannot thank you enough for the trust you placed in me to capture your big day. Everything was beautiful and perfect and I couldn’t be happier to have had the opportunity. Love you guys.
